Lobby Days 2017 Recap

Lobby Days 2017 was the Alliance’s first set of formal meetings with the new NDP government and our week spend in Parliament was a positive and productive experience. Our team consisted of 15 delegates from all five member associations and two observers (University of the Fraser Valley Student Union Society and The Graduate Student Society at Simon Fraser University), may of whom were new or first time lobbyists. The invaluable training and knowledge of our volunteer support staff helped ensure that our delegates were well prepared to lobby our asks. We secured many important meetings and even an impromptu, and very exciting, visit with the
Speaker of the House. Our meetings with the Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and
Training and the opposition critics helped ensure our asks were thoroughly discussed in the appropriate ministries. Our asks were widely well received, most of them were part of the NDPs election platform, making it easier to discuss in depth how these issues really impact the student experience. Our meetings this year were very productive, as many MLAs and Ministers assured us that most of our asks would be addressed in the upcoming or future budgets, leaving us with a sense of accomplishment. I am very proud of the Alliance’s dedicated delegates, who advocated for students with passion. The Alliance’s passion and success leaves me eager to begin planning our next lobby days for Spring 2018.
